The laparoscopic devices market in Algeria is gradually advancing, influenced by the global rise in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and the country’s ongoing healthcare modernization efforts. A recent systematic review published on PubMed, titled Robotic and laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer in Africa: an outcome comparison endorsed by the Nigerian Society for colorectal disorders, examined MIS for colorectal cancer across seven African countries, including Algeria. The study found that laparoscopic surgeries made up 95% of cases, far surpassing robotic procedures at 5%, highlighting the widespread adoption of laparoscopy in Algerian surgical practices. Additionally, a prospective study conducted at Ain Taya Hospital in Algiers from February 2018 to October 2021 involving 337 emergency laparoscopic abdominal surgeries reported a very low conversion rate of 0.3% and a postoperative complication rate of just 6.2%, underscoring the safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic methods in Algeria. The government continues to make substantial investments in the public healthcare system, which offers free medical care to all citizens, with ongoing plans to build new hospitals and refurbish existing ones—efforts that will drive demand for advanced medical equipment, including laparoscopic devices. Nevertheless, obstacles such as the high costs of cutting-edge technology, limited training opportunities for specialized procedures like robotic surgery, and regulatory and customs delays for imported devices remain. Despite these challenges, Algeria’s expanding healthcare sector and growing patient awareness of advanced surgical options create promising prospects for the laparoscopic devices market’s growth.
