The increasing cancer mortality rate in Bulgaria remains a significant concern among European nations, largely due to challenges in treatment access and financial burdens faced by patients. Public spending on cancer treatment has exceeded 700 million euros, with approximately 69% of patients bearing out-of-pocket costs. Key risk factors such as smoking, poor dietary habits, and alcohol consumption contribute to the high prevalence of cancer in the country, with breast and lung cancers being the most common types.
The absence of widespread public cancer screening programs is a major factor driving the high mortality rate. However, growing public investment in cancer diagnosis infrastructure and heightened awareness of new treatment options are expected to boost the cancer therapeutics market in Bulgaria in the coming years. Additionally, the Bulgarian government has introduced the National Cancer Plan 2030, which prioritizes early detection and cancer prevention, aiming to enhance diagnosis rates throughout the forecast period.
